Land Asset Monitoring Fails Weeks Before the Incident, Not on the Day of It
Land asset monitoring in mining rarely fails on the day of the incident. It fails weeks earlier, when no one detected the fire hotspot while it was still controllable, or when an illegal occupation wasn’t mapped in time. To close that window, NOR Space Intelligence monitors, 24 hours a day, a large-scale land portfolio, with over a thousand assets spread across tens of thousands of hectares.
Why a portfolio with this much diversity doesn’t fit a single rule
A portfolio this size brings together dams, active operational perimeters, PRAD areas, land under licensing, and environmental protection strips, each with its own interpretation logic. Vegetation regrowth within a PRAD area is a positive signal, since recovery is happening, while the same regrowth within an active operational perimeter is a problem requiring an immediate ticket. A system that can’t tell one case from the other generates noise, and an operation that learns to ignore notifications has effectively stopped monitoring even while the system keeps running.
The metric that matters isn’t how many alerts the system generates, but how many arrive correct, to the right person, at a moment when action is still possible. That’s why every asset receives parameters calibrated by the client’s technical team, defining what counts as an expected event, what’s an exception, and what triggers a ticket. The platform doesn’t run on generic logic — it runs on the asset’s logic.
How hundreds of fire hotspots were detected before becoming liabilities
Over twelve months of operation, more than 500 fire hotspots were detected across this portfolio, but that number alone tells little of the story. What matters is the gap between the start of the hotspot and the ticket reaching the field team, and whether that gap still falls within the window where the fire remains controllable. Detection combines thermal sensors from a high-cadence public constellation with optical-image validation and automatic prioritization by proximity to critical assets, so the alert reaches the responsible party’s phone already with polygon, coordinates, and context — not as a generic red blob someone still has to interpret before acting.
ANM Resolution No. 220/2025, published in November 2025, broadened the concept of affected area to include any stretch where tailings or pollutants could reach a protected area or disrupt economic activity, which in practice expanded the perimeter requiring continuous-monitoring evidence and narrowed the margin for anyone still monitoring by ad hoc reports.
Why satellite evidence changed the weight of a response to ANM
After Brumadinho and Mariana, the regulator changed what it accepts as proof of monitoring: PAEBM, RIR, and the Stability Condition Declaration now require continuous demonstration, no longer ad hoc. A response to an ANM notification with hash, timestamp, and versioned methodology from the orbital image to the report carries different procedural weight than a spreadsheet-based report — a difference any operator who has been through a TAC or an infraction notice recognizes on first read. Continuous satellite monitoring has stopped being a competitive edge and become a requirement, and what the regulator now measures isn’t what the mining company declares, but what it can prove, with an evidence chain traceable back to the date the event actually happened.
A diagnostic of your portfolio, with no field visit
For operations with Class II or III dams, active PRADs, or ANM regulatory pressure, NOR delivers a complete land-portfolio diagnostic within a few business days, with no travel or team mobilization. The deliverable includes a current-status map for every asset with risk classification and event history, identification of active events (fire, illegal occupation, deforestation) with exact coordinates, an evidence chain already ready for ANM, IBAMA, and Civil Defense, a comparison between the reported state and the satellite-verified state, and an estimate of available coverage for the operation’s region.
Anyone who wants this diagnostic can talk directly with the NOR team.
